Westrandweg motorway

From 2009 to 2011, Spanbeton worked with Combinatie Westpoort vof on the development of the Westrandweg motorway.

Klant:
Rijkswaterstaat and Combinatie Westpoort vof (Van Hattum & Blankevoort BV, KWS, Boskalis BV)

Project:
Project-specific solution for the Westrandweg

In consultation with the contractor Van Hattum en Blankevoort, Spanbeton developed a special bridge beam for the 3 km long viaduct KW520 called the ‘PIQ beam’.

The PIQ beam used is 2.8 m wide. Its design is what makes it special. A 2 m wide box girder is provided with flanges on the underside to make the functional width of the beam as wide as possible, given the requirement of Rijkswaterstaat that the joints between them should be as minimal as possible. Some 850 PIQ beams are made in a horizontal arc and the edge beams are chamfered.
PIQ beams are an average of 40 metres long and weigh 145 tons.

The Westrandweg forms the connection between the new 2nd Coen Tunnel and the existing A5 motorway.
